Question about shorting, particularly on the AMEX. I tried to short a stock with a limit order, and the bid came up and hit the limit but the trade did not fill. The broker's explanation was that the uptick has to be on the AMEX, as well as an uptick from the last PRINT on the Amex. THe last bid print at the AMEX was 14 1/4 on a downtick, but the lower bid number was from the secondary market.

Question: in order to uptick, does the lower bid have to print on the Amex, or can it just move from the lower bid to a higher bid if both are on the Amex? I'm kind of ticked because I put in a market order for two hours without a fill, and I saw the bid on the Amex go from 14 1/8 to 14 3/16 without a fill, so I was wondering if it actually had to print at that lower bid before you could get an uptick for shorting.
