Hi Jules, I believe Intel took action at this time because AMD has started using "MMX enabled" to describe their K6 chip (per press releases out of CeBIT). The timing is ironic, but I agree it wasn't pre-determined. It's simply the point at which AMD started imfringing on the trademark which Intel had submitted for registration earlier this year. Approval for the trademark is pending but can be used as such by Intel in the meantime.

AMD's response was "This is not trademarkable, any more than the 386 name was. Moreover, the patent and trademark office has not affirmed the trademark,".

This response by AMD is absurd, insomuch as it typically takes some time for approval and a company is allowed to use submitted trademark in the interim. I believe Intel has a good case here!
