MPEG2 Rules The Set-top Box... Enables Next-generation Video Services, Says Insight Research 06/03/1999 Business Wire (Copyright (c) 1999, Business Wire)
PARSIPPANY, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 3, 1999-- MPEG -2, a digital video compression technology that shaves transmission bandwidth in TV set-top boxes, satellite set-top boxes, DVD players, camcorders, and PCs, is set to grow at more than 50% annually, says a new report by INSIGHT RESEARCH.
Global sales of devices that utilize MPEG-2 encoders and decoders will reach $23.9 billion this year and top $125 billion in 2003.
According to INSIGHT's report The Market for MPEG-2 and Video Services, the convergence of communications, information, and entertainment is driving the need for MPEG-2. MPEG-2 will be essential to the success of next-generation digital video services and equipment, allowing content and devices from multiple vendors to interact. All of the industries considering digital video service distribution have to make MPEG-2 part of the planning process; it is crucial in broadband distribution and network access equipment. While global revenue for MPEG-2 encoding and decoding products will grow 51.5 percent annually through 2003, select segments, such as decoders for HDTV and set-top boxes, will nearly double year over year.
"Our research leaves little doubt that consumer demand for video products relying on MPEG-2 is accelerating," says Robert Rosenberg, president of INSIGHT. "The success of digital video as part of a broadband bundle will ultimately depend on the ability of the service providers to deliver services economically on an end-to-end basis, from content source to consumer."
Further MPEG-2 market analysis is published in The Market for MPEG-2 and Video Services, 1998-2003, a 158-page market research study now available from INSIGHT RESEARCH for $3,495. This report provides five-year revenue and unit sales forecasts for MPEG-2 encoding and decoding products: DVDs, DVD-RAMs, HDTVs, VCRs, PCs, digital camcorders, and cable and DBS converters. INSIGHT discusses alternative compression technologies, examines customer segments and network implications, and profiles encoder/decoder vendor competition.
