OT.

I guess this should more appropriately go via p.m., but the matter may be of interest to any others in rural areas contemplating the purchase of a new computer.

The more I look into it, the more it appears that the problem is with the Winmodem's inability to adjust downward to a lower baud rate when 56k is not attainable. There is a line in the modem configuration part of dial up networking called Extra settings. Enter a code that disables V90, and the modem worked - at 26k. I guess that's what I'll live with for the rest of the summer, though I'll look into satellite.

What I don't understand is why the savvy marketers at Dell aren't up to this problem and steer customers with give-away addresses like South Pomfret to a 3Com Sportster and away from the winmodem.
