SEC investigating MCI over SkyTel

Compiled by CBS MarketWatch
Last Update: [Timestamp]

NEW YORK (CBS.MW) -- The Securities and Exchange Commission is investigating whether MCI WorldCom Inc. misled investors when it appeared to deny that it planned to buy SkyTel Communications Inc. According to The Wall Street Journal, MCI's statement on May 25 came three days before it announced a deal to acquire the wireless paging company for $1.3 billion. The news release was prompted when an Internet business-information service called Company Sleuth said MCI had registered the Internet domain name "skytelworldcom.com," which immediately raised questions about whether MCI was poised to acquire SkyTel. Trading in SkyTel (SKYT: news, msgs) stock surged to 7.4 million shares, triple its usual amount. The price jumped as much as 16 percent during the day before closing at $20.125, up 6 percent, after MCI (WCOM: news, msgs) issued its statement in the afternoon amid a flood of inquiries from the media.
