CARVILLE TO HELP HILLARY WIN SENATE SEAT

XXXXX DRUDGE REPORT XXXXX THURSDAY, JUNE 03, 1999 21:09:55 UTC XXXXX

Late on Thursday, First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton met with political wizard James Carville to discuss her likely run for the U.S. Senate seat from New York.

And if the first lady does make the run, Carville will play a major role in her campaign.

Busy Carville will make Hillary's campaign one of his top priorities in the 2000 races, according to a source familiar with the Cajun's consulting plans.

"He's there for her, he's behind her 5,001 percent," says a source.

[ "Sounds like they'll be using Whitewater accounting for this race," notes a poster on one of the first lady's least favorite websites, freerepublic.com ]

Hillary Clinton met Carville at the White House after she posed for an upcoming cover story for the new TALK magazine [fresh?], the latest project from former NEW YORKER Tina Brown.

Meanwhile, people close to New York City Mayor Giuliani -- who has already formed an exploratory committee -- have said in recent days that he will "definitely" run for the Senate if Mrs. Clinton is in the game

One associate tells Friday's BOSTON GLOBE: "He's chomping at the bit for her."

The mayor himself lashed out at the first lady from Michigan on Thursday, where he was miles from home, addressing a business group.

On the Ickes news that Hillary is ready to set up a exploratory committee, Giuliani said: "Maybe she should explore New York a little more."
