The unemployment rate, at 4.2 percent, was little changed in May, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported today. The number of nonfarm payroll jobs edged up by 11,000, following a large increase of 343,000 in April (as revised).
Average hourly earnings of production or nonsupervisory workers on private nonfarm payrolls increased by 5 cents in May to $13.19, seasonally adjusted. Average weekly earnings rose by 0.7 percent in May to $455.06, seasonally adjusted. Over the year, average hourly earnings rose by 3.6 percent and average weekly earnings rose by 3.0 percent.
