Network Solutions Registers Five Millionth Address June 4, 1999

Business News Archives

Network Solutions Inc , which up until recently enjoyed a federally sanctioned monopoly over registering Web addresses, on Thursday said it reached the five million mark registering a domain name ending in .com, .org. or .net.

On May 29, Katharine Weissmann became the five millionth registrant when she reserved believeinkids.com to build a Web site that features extraordinary kids and their accomplishments, the company said.

Network Solutions began registering .com, .org. and .net addresses since 1993, when it took over the job from the federal government and inherited about 7,000 previously registered names. About 85 percent of the names are .com, and about 90 percent are registered to businesses, a Network Solutions spokeswoman said.

Network Solutions charges $70 for each name registration, which lasts two years and then must be renewed. Names ending in .edu, which are registered to educational institutions, are free. There are about 6,000 .edu addresses, the spokeswoman said.

Weissmann has nine sites registered, including Kitbiz, a specialty bridal business that sells name-change-kits.

Network Solutions said it took four years to register the first million domain names and 15 months after that to reach the two million mark. Six months it reached three million names. Four months later it reached the four million mark, and less than three months after that it hit five million.
