On the New Ericsson Announcement, I see Ericsson, like everyone else who has tried (or will try) to do ADSL on their own and find out it's not that easy to achieve 8Mbps.
"Copper networks enabling faster Internet access Publication Date: 11/07/96
Synopsis: Ericsson of Sweden has developed a system for copper networks which will allow Internet access at 512 kilobits per second (rather than conventional modems' 28.8 kilobits per second and digital versions' 64 kilobits per second). The system, known as a Cobra World Wide Web transmission system, is based on ADSL technology. It uses a device that splits a standard telephone line into 2 channels, one of which (the low band) is used for voice communication, while the other (the high band) is used for data transmission."
Of course Cioffi has his DMT Machine running at 10Mbps down, 2Mbps Up on shorter loops.
