I heard on a business news program that the 10+ drop in Philip Morris accounted for roughly 35 points in the Dow's decline... You probably already know that the Dow is made up of 30 stocks and at the end of each day, the point move in the Dow is an average of what those 30 stocks did during the day... I believe the Dow is a weighted average index, meaning that each stock is assigned a particular "weight" (a number) that represents the stocks "importance" in the index... I'm sure you could find a detailed explanation of the index somewhere on the web...
