Tom: re "I do not believe that it is in NEC's best interests to start a price war."

START a price war? What does she think it's been so far, a border skirmish? That's like calling the Titanic's problem "seepage."

Simple question - if a market that has been growing supply at 86% to the detriment of supply/demand balance has a major supplier decide to increase its production 150%, how many minor suppliers must be squeezed out to get the total supply growth down to the range that supply/demand balance begins to reappear? I'd be very interested in her response.

I believe that this should be a major concern for all those who are getting really excited by the prospect of additional concentration in this area. What happens is you're left with a shorter list of players who all have much more to lose by dropping out and are therefore more incented to drive their own costs down. That in and of itself wouldn't be a problem, except that Steve Appleton tried to explain away MU's market-disrupting bit growth by describing it as the natural and unavoidable consequence of an on-going effort to reduce costs. What happens when half-a-dozen major players all do it together? Yikes! - Tad LaFountain
