"you have not been CONVICTED of a felonious act, therefore not a felon."

Hmm, that's a rather narrow definition. My American Heritage Dictionary (3rd Edition) defines felon simply as a person who commits a felony. We all know most of the felonies committed in this country do not result in convictions. Definition #2 would also be apropos, except that it's archaic.

fel·on1 (fµl“…n) n. 1. Law. One who has committed a felony. 2. Archaic. An evil person. --fel·on adj. Archaic. Evil; cruel.

fel·on2 (fµl“…n) n. A painful, purulent infection at the end of a finger or toe in the area surrounding the nail. Also called whitlow.
