Interesting ZD article on Savage4.

From benchmarkinsider.com June '99 edition

I don't know how much I can repeat, but a quick summary of the spread says :

"ZDBOp has, however, recommended to all ZD media enterprises that they do not publish any scores for the earlier Savage4 display adapters..."

as well as the following admonition :
"OEMs often have to evaluate a beta version of an adapter and driver that virtually noone other than the adapter's manufacturer has seen. Many OEMs rely on tools like 3D WinBench, (yadda, yadda, yadda.) If you see scores that seem too good to be true, they probably are. Remember the case of the Savage4 and drop us a line..."

S3's explanation :
This was a bug in earlier versions of their driver that was fortuitously giving them a boost in the score. The bug is now fixed.

---

BTW, one of their OEM 'wins' was so unhappy with this that they have moved to the 'no-win' column.

The discovery date of this seems to correspond roughly with KenP's form 144... Any conspiracy theorists want to byte?
