Here is more on rig count: U.S. oil drilling rig count up 21, Canada up 52 NEW YORK, June 4 (Reuters) - The number of rigs exploring for oil and natural gas in the United States rose 21 from last week to stand at 555 as of June 4, and down from 1083 a year ago, oil services firm Baker Hughes Inc. said Friday.
The number of rigs drilling on land was up 20 to 431, while rigs working offshore lost five to 101. The number of rigs active in inland waters gained four to 21.
The Gulf of Mexico rig count lost four to 100.
The number of rigs searching for gas rose 17 to 421, and the number of rigs searching for oil gained four to 134.
There were no miscellaneous rigs, unchanged from last week.
There were 159 rigs exploring directionally, 30 exploring horizontally, and 366 exploring vertically.
In Canada, the number of working rigs rose 52 from the previous week to 158, compared with 221 a year ago.
The states with the largest change in their rig count were Texas, which gained three, Louisiana, which gained six, and New Mexico, which gained seven.
The weekly rig count reflects the number of rigs exploring for oil and gas, not those producing oil and gas.
