Thanks the the info and URLs. Very helpful.
What interests me is that, despite all these companies using XML in their applications, a lot of vendors are not. In my field, none of our vendors (we use different trading systems per instrument traded, almost) are even looking into this. In the Enterprise Application Intergation field (middleware), of the numerous vendors that we looked at, only one generated or used XML in their applications. We are looking into SAP Financials for the back office and G/L side (it's not ready yet) and I doubt that any of this is done in XML. If the EAI vendors and ERP vendors could use a universal framework of XML message tags then the whole middleware integration area would be easier.
I just hope these companies also catch up. For example, it's all well and good having XML support in websphere (which we use) but if we cannot leverage the tagging capability in our middleware product (which uses webshere for the intranet part) then we are missing out on a great piece of technology that can make future integration a lot easier.
