Dell Hires PepsiCo Executive as Head of Worldwide Operations

Round Rock, Texas, June 2 (Bloomberg) -- Dell Computer Corp., the No. 1 direct seller of personal computers, said it hired PepsiCo Inc. executive David Allen to head worldwide operations, replacing Keith Maxwell, who is retiring.

Allen, 38, was senior vice president of operations at Pepsi's Frito-Lay unit. He started at Dell yesterday. Maxwell, 51, will remain at Dell until later this year to help Allen with the transition. Maxwell was with the company for six years.

Maxwell's retirement comes amid a slowdown in Dell's sales growth. Sales for the first quarter ended April 30 rose 41 percent, less than the year-earlier increase of 51 percent and slower than the 54 percent growth Dell averaged in the previous eight quarters. The company is looking to markets outside the U.S. for further expansion, and it expects Allen to help. ''We wanted someone with global manufacturing experience,'' said Dell spokesman T.R. Reid. Allen ''fits the bill.''

Dell said Maxwell's departure was amicable. ''Keith Maxwell has done an exceptional job,'' Dell Vice Chairman Mort Topfer in a statement.

Shares of Dell, based in the Austin, Texas, suburb of Round Rock, have fallen 39 percent since touching a record high of 55 on Feb. 2. They rose 7/16 to 33 1/2 today.

Allen, who will oversee all of Dell's worldwide operations including manufacturing, joins other prominent computer executives in making the switch from the food industry.

Lou Gerstner became Chairman and Chief Executive at International Business Machines Corp. in 1993 and is credited with reviving the company after a long slump. Before that, he was chairman and chief executive of RJR Nabisco Holdings Corp.

John Sculley, who was chairman and chief executive at Apple Computer Inc. until 1993, went to the PC maker in 1983 after being CEO at PepsiCo. Apple's board removed him as CEO for poor performance, and he resigned as chairman shortly thereafter.

Allen joined Frito-Lay in 1991 as a vice president of operations, and was later general manager of a joint venture with Sara Lee Corp. He also has worked at consulting firm Booz, Allen & Hamilton Inc. and Saturn Corp., the wholly owned subsidiary of General Motors Corp., the world's largest automaker.

Allen has a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the General Motors Institute. He also has a master's degree from the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration.
