In my area, there is a lot of competition for home and small business computers. For example, in today's paper there are at least 5 different 1 and 2 page ads from medium size computer stores. These stores advertise different systems( Compaq, HP, IBM, Packard Bell, and A-Open Pro). An example of A-Open Pro- Pentium III 450MMX, 128M Ram, 10 gig hard drive, DVD CD ROM, speakers, 56K modem, WIN 98, encyclopedia, 17" SVGA monitor, HP color printer, full page photo scanner, a software bundle, cellular phone, color camera, accessory kit(for the camera?), 1 hour class, $100.00 off extended warranty, set up & demo, deluxe joystick, office suite, 0% financing- no money down- no interest for 1 year.(Might as well as throw in a kitchen sink too!) All that for $730.15. That's only one of the ads. With this kind of cut-throat business, it would seem to be very hard for Dell to do a significant amount of (home and small business) computer sales in my area. |
