I think he was posting a joke on the level of an ethnic one, an insensitive Polish joke, of sorts, about lawyers, (though I didn't see the list,) and he apologized for the insensitivity of it, and your interpretation is that he "called" you "a liar and a thief and a cheat"?

I guess not, now; but it's just so upsetting and seems so extreme. I mean, you have just ended a friendship. Though I guess if you truly believe that Lather was calling you a cheat and liar and thief instead of trying (insensitively, he sees) to make you laugh, it isn't being extreme.
