you still maintain that Juniper just give M40 out for free?

Absolutely not.. If you recall my earlier comment I suggested that Juniper was seeding the market to get experience with their product and to convince carriers that it's ready for prime time. $10M is mice-nuts. Going forward Juniper will do very well and I'd love to get in on the IPO.

Your second comment regarding Cisco and a potential acquisition of Juniper.... I don't think the current investors would let that happen. Given that Juniper is likely to be worth more on the IPO than Cisco would be willing to pay and given that these investors are Cisco competitors it's highly unlikely Cisco could buy Juniper. My guess is that Cisco would love to..... just a guess though.

To take this a step further Juniper will take some signficant business in core networks. This indeed could be damanging to Cisco.. but equally damaging to any other vendor with sights on selling core switching equipment. You see, it's not an issue of core router versus core router. It's an issue of core solutions versus core solutoins which could also include ATM. Juniper will take market share away from ALL incumbents that sell into the core space. So your comment about market share is valuable, but it's my opinion that the danger here is to ATM core switching since it represents a far greater percentage of core equipment than does routing - at least today. WIth Juniper carriers will get to critical mass on IP core routing providing more opportunities for companies that have core routers. The Juniper M40 will help further convergence onto IP which I think is a good thing for Cisco.
