To ALL [ VDSL Ignites Old Debate ]

By Jeff Caruso

Vendors are perpetuating the needless bickering between CAP (Carrierless Amplitude and Phase Modulation) and DMT (Discrete Multitone) with VDSL (very high-speed digital subscriber line)

Though VDSL is limited to shorter distances than asymmetric DSL, it can reach speeds of up to 52 megabits per second in one direction.

Earlier this year 10 vendors formed the VDSL Coalition to write system specification proposals and present them to the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) T1E1.4 working group. The group, however, is coming down hard on the side of CAP. DMT line coding for VDSL has already been proposed.

The religious war between proponents of the CAP and DMT varieties of ADSL does nothing for end users, since the line coding is inconsequential to them. "The debate with ADSL has slowed the deployment of that technology," said Kieran Taylor, broadband consultant at TeleChoice Inc., Verona, N.J.

Members of the VDSL Coalition are Analog Devices,BroadBand Technologies, Broadcom, GlobeSpan Technologies, Harris Semiconductor, Lucent Technologies,Metalink, Orckit Communications, Rockwell International and Schmid Telecom.
