Novell invades NT market with administration tools

Marching forward in its assault on the Windows NT market, Novell has launched a tool that allows NT-based users and groups to be administered from the NetWare Administrator utility (also called NWAdmin).
Called Administrator for Windows NT, the tool is designed to provide centralized administration of mixed IntranetWare and NT networks. It works by synchronizing the NT users and groups with the Novell Directory Services (NDS) database, allowing NDS to act as a master repository for all network information.
Features include the ability to migrate NT domain users in groups to NDS and to synchronize databases to create a single directory map. Because administration is performed through NDS, the system also eliminates the need for trusts within NT Server environments. As many as 10,000 users and group objects can be supported in each NT domain, according to Novell.
John Kiger, director of product management for Novell's management products division, said that Novell Administrator for NT is intended to complement Novell's other NT management products, including Novell Application Launcher, the ManageWise NT agent for performance monitoring and alarm management, the IntranetWare client for NT, and NT Workstation Manager.
Administrator for Windows NT will ship next week. For six months, Novell is making it available for free from the Novell Web page for existing ManageWise and IntranetWare customers.
