Bob,

The Saturday 15 March 1997 issue of BusinessWeek Online has an interesting and informative article on physician practice management that mentions the MedPartners and Aetna agreement:

DOCTORS INC. Physician practice management groups are revolutionizing health care, while Wall Street cheers businessweek.com

The article says in part: "On Mar. 5, MedPartners and Aetna U.S. Healthcare, a subsidiary of Aetna Inc., put this philosophy into practice on a grand scale, announcing an agreement under which many of the health insurer's 14 million health-care customers will gain access to the 10,688 physicians affiliated with MedPartners.". . . . "PPM acquirers tend to replace local administrators with their own people and may trim overhead by eliminating support staff positions in the bargain. The new owners also consolidate purchasing, obtaining everything from paper clips and envelopes to catheters and malpractice insurance at big discounts to what the clinic had paid previously."

Don't you like the words: "on a grand scale" and "consolidate purchasing" More patients for MedPartners and more tests to be sold by Quidel under its three year supply contract in which Quidel will supply MedPartners' physician groups with Quidel's entire range of rapid diagnostic tests.
