Are you suggesting that it is naive to suppose that investigator's don't know the results of double-blind clinical trials prior to breaking the code at the end of the study? I hope not. I would hope that a graduate student (not such a big difference, BTW, and I would go easy on the "colleague" stuff for now) would have more respect for the professional ranks that he intends to join.

Furthermore, Bill's remarks were right on, but he neglected to mention that the source, in addition to violating ethical norms, would also be violating security laws for which their may be CRIMINAL sanctions. That such information would cavalierly and reliably be passed along to a random graduate student at a conference, like so much gossip, is hard to believe. You should think about the credibility of the players in your information stream.

As for the value of the stock should the trials be unsuccessful, I think all the numbers I have seen in the last few posts are way too optimistic.
