There are predictions of an eight month
disruption to normal Zambian cobalt production
because of a large fire at the Indeni refinery.
See Financial Times 5-27-99.
Could Inco Voisey Bay or Ikar Minerals produce
the cobalt? Ikar claimed to have 23000 tonnes
of cobalt ore in news release of March 6, 1998.
Another firm, Colossal Resources, failed to
refine much cobalt from Zambian copper slag
due to electric arc furnace problems a while
ago, so seemed like a swindle of sorts. Sudden
low cobalt prices were partially a legitimate
factor in things though, at the time.
