This week's Barron's interview has this much to report about USR:

"There was no evidence to be found of easy solutions to the bandwidth constraints, which continue to make transmission of video a problem on the Web. U.S. Robotics showed off its new 56K modems, but seemed unable to get them to run much past 46K. "
