I've been in negotiations with a major label, but my genre is classical and since the market is so small, I'm not sure what I'd do even if offered the pittance this label would offer.

The artistic/classical market has *nothing* to do with the big business picture of pop music marketing which is the world we live in today. This isn't to say that I don't think my music has a chance in an ideal world, it's more to say that I recognize that the sheer sexual/narcissistic/indulgent/crap world of music that we live in today has nothing to do with the music that I write. For what it's worth, my Acid Bach MP3 is one of the few MP3's from MP3.COM to ever be pirated. Try searching at mp3.lycos.com for "Acid Bach." I consider it an honor, actually, to be found next to Aerosmith on pirate MP3 sites, but I'm a bit of an anarchist. In fact, it's likely the *only* MP3 that can be downloaded legally at MP3.COM to ever be pirated, and only because it's so freakin' weird.

I'm increasingly skeptical given the swiftly moving picture of streaming media providers that MP3.COM has a clue as to the big picture. Remember MP3.COM was just a guy who saw that the number of searches at most web search sites had suddenly changed from searches for porn to searches for MP3's. (See the Michael Robertson interviews). That's not to say the IPO won't be a huge hit, it's just that I might not want to be holding this stock if it doesn't get bought out by Yahoo or some other cash-rich company in the next 12 months... Robertson doesn't know squat about the music industry and he has no track record for music promotion, nor web promotion, period. He's just a lucky guy... with a web portal.
