Societies fall apart if there is too much difference- that is partly what the whole damn Balkan thing is all about; or the debacle today on feelies- without common ground, common reference points, feelings are hurt, wounds are made, and violence begins. You may be comfortable with differences but it is not natural for people or animals to be comfortable with what is different. After all in the forest primeaval what was different could be deadly. So it is my opinion that for the safety of society we should try to make people at least have baseline commonalities- People should be able to communicate- we'll have a pretty sucky society when we can't communicate with each other, and based on some taxi rides I've had recently we are fast headed in that direction and it blows. Further, social mores are a nice thing to have in common. Bombing the Balkans was stupid, imo. I said it before we did it, I said it during, and I still say it.
