In my opinion, AMD must present the best possible image at this time.
The impression AMD has cultivated has been that the K6 will offer equal or BETTER performance then Pentium II. Of course AMD has
refused to publish any benchmarks, or allow any independent comparisons so all we have is AMD's marketing, which may or may not be true. They have no proven track record of being able to produce state of the art processors on state of the art processes.
In fact they have a track record of long delays and poor performance.
To demo a 200mhz system, seems to me to be an admission that that's all they can do, even with hand picked parts in carefully controlled hand picked systems running hand picked apps.
Considering that AMD is a company on the verge of bankrupcy, with what they admit are no tear 1 customers, they must maintain this impression of "equal or better performance" at all costs. 200mhz demo's don't cut it. They need more.

Intel is in an entirely different position. Their fabs are sold out, their bank account is overflowing with cash, and they have a proven record of performance, delivery and demand for their products. They demoed a 266mhz system and have no reason to show their best. Why should they? Still no competition.

AMD has to show their best and they have to do it now.
