Paul - RE: "AMD is going to look PRETTY STUPID - introducing an EXPENSIVE Slot A K7, completely non-standard, at the same time Intel is transitioning BACK TO A SOCKETED version for the Coppermine."
Is Intel going to transition ALL its PIIIs from slots to sockets in overnight?
NO.
Are all the products (heatsinks and fans) designed just for Slot 1 going to disappear overnight?
NO.
Are prices of these products, which have been out for almost two years now, going to skyrocket?
NO.
Like Intel w/the PII, for the K7 the slot card is the only place to put the L2 cache, at least initially becuause of the .25 process.
So, AMD looks pretty smart for not coming up with their own socket (initially) and sticking with Intel's slot, which has had Intel backing for two years, which has may products already designed, proven, and ready to go. As Intel transitions completely to sockets, the people who make slots products will still have the K7 for its products to be used with.
The Register has also speculated the K7 will also eventually go to sockets. I wonder what AMD will do then.
"But then again, AMD has a history of looking pretty stupid."
AMD has a history of riding Intel's coat tails. |
