MMW,

After my last post I did a bit more dd..

Regarding a Cisco purcahse of Juniper. As it turns out the investors do not have seats on the board. That is, Juniper calls it's own shots. So, if they want to sell to cisco they can.

Next, I also understand that the opportunity for a Cisco purchase has past. There might have been a window of opportunity prior to Juniper shipping product but now it's too late. As you correctly pointed out in your post of a couple days ago, Juniper is begining to get significant traction in IP core networks. It would appear also that this is business that Cisco would likely have won with the 12000 if Juniper did not exist.

Now, onto your new points. The cisco GSR12000 may have some limitations however it's compatibility with Cisco higher level protocols make it the product of choice for many customers. So, although Juniper may be taking some business from Cisco (and other vendors) in the core I believe Cisco continues to grow this business.

Your comment about Cisco building a "new IOS" as being impossible... you're certainly entitled to that opinion. I can't argue an opinion.

Your last point about huge revenue to be captured in core IP. I agree 1000%. Core IP will begin stealing business from other core technologies and the opportunity in that market segment will explode. I don't believe that only one vendor will win this business and I also don't believe that Cisco is doing nothing. If you and I realize this market is huge you can bet that cisco management does as well and is likely to do something about it. Just a guess but I think it's a good one. Unfortunately it won't be buying Juniper IMHO. :(

Oh, one final and significant point. Tony Lee left Juniper 2 weeks ago. OUCH!
