Well whatever anybody has a right to do really isn't the issue, its all politics. The fact is when Clinton does stuff like this its like hes daring them to come after him and of course they won't because it would expose them as bigots (which they are). Dianne Feinstein was thrilled with this appointment, thats good enough for me. The thing those old white guys on the right don't get is that when they stand up and say, "we won't appoint him because hes gay" - they not only scare the gay community to death but also the minorities and women too. Of course the fervent catholics might line up behind Lott but how many of those are there... not many. BTW someone asked me once to dig up an article on minorities in California and I found one link once that was pretty good and can't seem to get it back... but here's some peripheral pieces... its pretty common knowledge that California is a white minority state, I guess NY will be next and then maybe Florida.

They are already a majority in New Mexico, Hawaii, and many large cities.
California will reach a statewide minority majority in 2000 and Texas will by 2010. --- actually it already happened, this article is obsolete.

In Los Angeles county, where "minorities" now make up two-thirds of the population,
