Going with the Winners

By Arnold Kaufman, Editor, S&P's The Outlook

NEW YORK, Jun. 04 (Standard & Poor's) - Despite
frequent predictions of radical change in the nature
of this bull market, the look of the advance has
remained remarkably stable. The
large-capitalization growth stock momentum plays
have carried the ball most of the time in recent
years. While the economically sensitive sector, as
well as the small- and mid-cap groups, appear to offer relatively
attractive value, staying with the winners may well continue to pay
off.

We searched our database for stocks carrying an S&P STARS ranking
of , or buy (those our analysts rate highest for potential
year-ahead appreciation) that have also been the best performers
since they were added to the five-STARS portfolio. All had to score
gains since inclusion of 80% or more and the gains had to be at
least double the percentage rise in the S&P 500 for the period the
stocks were included among the five-STARS.

Value STARS: By buying stocks with P/Es that are modest in comparison
to strong earnings potential, you are, in effect, building a store of value that
is bound to manifest itself eventually. We found 11 top-ranked stocks that
fit that description.

The Sweet Spot: In an attempt to take advantage of the "indexing effect" as
well as of any particularly popular capitalization-size this year, we cut the
S&P 500 into five 100-stock slices by market cap. We then found the
top-ranked stocks in the best-performing segment.

Playing Catch-Up: Investors seem to be showing greater interest in
long-neglected second-tier issues, including many small- and mid-cap
issues. We searched our database for stocks that have trailed the market's
good showing so far this year by a significant margin, but still have good
EPS prospects. We found 13 top-ranked examples.

High Yielding Stocks with Bright Earnings Prospects: An above-average
dividend yield means the shareholder is receiving a tangible reward for his
or her investment -- rather than a promise of appreciation in the future. A
high yield also tends to cushion a stock in a market correction. We found
16 superior stocks with yields more than double that of the S&P 500.
