People need to recognize that Portland is one city and really
is not a big issue for cities like Seattle, LA, and etc...
has already worked out a compromising deal with Ma Bell...

I suspect Ma Bell will start a major campaign to end this
minor nuisance in Portland...I say lets make an example
out of Portland and let them miss out on the broadband era
of the internet...we all know that the current state of e commerce
cannot be tolerated for much longer, especially if the business
communities around the globe are planning to incorporate e commerce
into their operations...broadband is the future...but there are
many other alternatives like ADSL, SATs, etc...this is one
major flaw in the monopoly argument...plus one need to be given
incentives/rewards for spending 'billions' to upgrade
the infrastructure...if I was a businessman and the government wants
to dictate my billion-dollar investment, curtailing my
earning potential, I will leave...

I think what will happen is exclusive play for the first 3 years
so Ma Bell and recoup cost of investments and then they will open
it up, but don't see the goverment (local or federal) able
to tell Ma Bell how much they can charge other ISPs...

@home will be fine...
