The monuments and other public buildings intentionally mimic the public architecture of the ancient Greeks and Romans. I think that's the beginning of not-cool. It's ersatz. Real ancient ruins are cool. Imitation ancient ruins are kitch.

You have the right idea, jpmac. As a native Washingtonian, I can say that there is no place I would rather be from. It is a beautiful city, and, by the way, we have two rivers (the Potomac and the Anacostia), and many more not so far away. The Smithsonian is a fabulous thing to grow up near, as is the National Gallery. To stand in the middle of the Mall, with the Capitol on one end, and the Washington Monument visible on the other, cherry trees abloom, is a great joy. As soon as my son graduates high- school, my wife and I will move back, even though we are only an hour's drive from downtown now...
