Doesn't look like Giga Byte will have K7 motherboards shipping for a couple of months after K7 launch in June. From AsiaBiz [Computex Taipei '99] Giga-Byte to Develop K7 Motherboard June 3, 1999 (TAIPEI) -- Giga-Byte Technology Co., Ltd. said it plans to develop a motherboard for the "AMD-K7" next-generation x86 microprocessor that is being designed by Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) of the United States. Giga-Byte made the announcement at the Computex show, which is being held in Taiwan through June 5. The company is planning to start mass production using chipsets made by AMD. It will begin shipments in the third quarter of 1999. The main specifications of the K7 motherboard are a 200MHz external bus and compliance with the Ultra DMA66, using a high-speed SDRAM with the maximum capacity of 768MB for main memory. The form factor is ATX, according to Giga-Byte. Giga-Byte did not stage any demonstrations of the device under development at its booth at Computex, but it is showing the board under development to a limited number of its clients. Apparently, the product under development has not reached operational status. AMD is staging demonstrations of the AMD-K7 system at its Computex booth to a limited number of its clients. The company has no plans to sell motherboards for the K7. Thus, PC makers will not be able to build the K7 system unless they procure motherboards from makers such as Giga-Byte or develop such boards themselves. AMD is planning to announce the K7 in June, and since Giga-Byte's motherboard will be made public only after July, there will be a short interval between the start of shipments of the microprocessor and the motherboard.
