INTERMEC AND MICROSOFT ATTRACT 75 SOFTWARE PARTNERS FOR NEW Windows CE-Based Data Collection PC Product Line
Strong Support for the Industry's First Windows CE-Based Devices
For Enterprise Data Collection
EVERETT, Wash., June 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Intermec Technologies Corporation and Microsoft Corporation announced today that 75 leading companies are developing applications for the world's first family of Windows(R) CE-based Data Collection PCs(TM). The broad level of support from the developer community demonstrates the strong demand for Enterprise Data Collection solutions in Fortune 500 corporations.
Intermec's first product in the family of Data Collection PCs, the 5020, is the first Windows CE-based PC specifically designed for data collection in the manufacturing, warehousing and distribution industries. It has attracted the attention of software developers who see it becoming the standard in the industry.
Intermec and 75 software developers are customizing Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) middleware, Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) and additional applications such as maintenance management, asset management, route accounting, distribution and shop floor data collection for the 5020 hand-held Data Collection PC and Intermec's other Windows CE-based products. In comparison with other Windows CE-based devices, Intermec's Data Collection PC provides value-added software and hardware specifically designed for enterprise data collection with an integrated scanner and rugged architecture.
MIS departments will benefit from the partnership of Intermec, Microsoft and 75 software companies by gaining the familiarity of the Windows operating system in a data collection device, unavailable until now, creating a seamless extension to enterprise systems and architectures. Recent Gartner Group research found that adding real-time data collection to your ERP system improves the return on investment by 50%. The family of Data Collection PCs will also provide users web-based connectivity utilizing standard protocols and remote management features. Combined with tailored solutions to address specific capabilities, the products will enhance productivity and reduce costs.
Software developers will save time by utilizing Windows tools such as Visual Basic, Visual C++, and HTML to create and implement applications for the Data Collection PCs. Another benefit of the Data Collection PC family for developers is the ability to manage the mobile data collection devices from a standard PC with Web connection, which significantly decreases time spent on management and reduces support costs. "The tremendous response from the software developer community interested in creating applications for Intermec's first product in their Windows(R) CE-based Data Collection PC family establishes a solid foundation for the success of this venture," says Graham Clark, Director for Product Industries, Microsoft. "We look forward to working with Intermec in the future on their entire line of Windows CE-based devices for the enterprise." "We are excited by the immense support for our family of Windows CE-based products from the developer community. The partnership between Microsoft, Intermec, and the software developers will add incredible value to our customers by providing industry specific applications on a familiar and integratable architecture for their enterprise," says Tony Black, Group Manager, Business Development, Intermec.
About Windows CE
Windows CE was designed to provide connectivity and interoperability to power the new era of interconnected computing devices. Because the modular, scalable Windows CE platform is based on the Win32 API, developers can use their programming knowledge to build applications. The Win32-based process model creates the first widely available platform to foster a thriving third-party industry, with products such as advanced development and analysis tools, network protocols and software libraries and utilities. At the same time, Windows CE provides a stable, well-supported and modular operating system that can handle the wide variety of hardware platforms.
