Just finished reading the Vortex white paper on their web site and I have to say they make a very compelling argument for this architecture. Reduced cost, reduced chips, reduced software, much easier software upgrades, serial network interface (with protection switching) that reduces probability of a single point of failure, reduced overall complexity, reduced time to market. Am I missing something here? Can't say I see many arguments against it.

Mr Wrong (oops-Wong - sorry David, but how many times can you make the wrong call on PMC? (editorial note - I respect david's intelligence and knowledge of the chip industry - its just that his stock picking is subject to question) from Needham says he likes it but the industry may still opt for a parallel bus like Transwitch delivers. Doubtful.

Related - Bell Atlantic alone is looking to qualify 10 million dsl lines this year and purchase up to $200M worth of DLAMS for over 350 COs (good for Alcatel). As I've said before, this also produces considerable pressure on the uplink infrastructure via Sonet elements/rings and ATM switches. Oh yeah - pmc sells chips for those too! Sorry for the enthusiasm, but the story just keeps getting better.
