<< June 07, 1999 08:11 Sun Delivers Microsoft Windows CE Reference Implementation for the PersonalJava Platform Jump to first matched term DENVER--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 7, 1999-- Reference Implementation from Sun Provides Developers With More Choices For Creating Exciting Content and Applications For Consumer Devices Today at the Windows CE Developers Conference, Sun Microsystems, Inc. announced the availability of a PersonalJava(TM) reference implementation for Windows CE. Designed for general purpose handheld PCs running Windows CE technology, the reference implementation will enable device manufacturers and service providers to expand their revenue streams by quickly and cost-effectively developing exciting new Java(TM) technology-based content and services. "Today's announcement represents an important milestone of Sun's success in the handheld PC market," said Curtis Sasaki, director, Product Marketing, Sun Microsystems. "With the PersonalJava reference implementation, Windows CE device manufacturers and developers will now be able take advantage of an open, standards-based Java application environment that reduces the development costs and time to market for applications and applets running on multiple consumer device platforms." Device manufacturers will be able to tap into the expertise of Sun's system integrator associates, Cadence Design Systems, Inc. and NSIcom, to obtain custom Windows CE solutions for their specific needs. "A Windows CE implementation of PersonalJava technology was the missing piece of the embedded Java technology story. There is clearly pent-up demand for this solution," said Jim Douglas, vice president of the Cadence Embedded Systems Design Group. "We are excited at the prospect of leveraging our extensive Java technology and Windows CE experience to help customers bring innovative products to market." "NSIcom welcomes the introduction of Sun's Java technology reference implementation for Windows CE," said Marius Gafen, vice president of marketing for NSIcom. "NSIcom understands the significant market demand for the capability of Java technology to run on Windows CE devices. NSIcom's CrEme shows Java technology's power to load new applications from the network and to enable these devices to run Java applets." Sun enables developers to distinguish their products from the competition by allowing them to choose their operating system and to customize the look and feel of their device through PersonalJava technology. The cross-platform ability of Java technology has the potential to reach the expected five billion consumer networked devices by 2003. Developers and device manufacturers can now choose a variety of operating systems, including Windows CE, without worrying about configuration. This announcement demonstrates the strength of Java technology by giving application developers the power to increase profits by creating content and applications that can be deployed across all underlying operating systems. The Java platform delivers a broad range of content and compatible applications to its customers. PersonalJava Technology The PersonalJava Application Programming Interface (API) provides developers with a unified way for programmers and manufacturers to create applications that run on a myriad of consumer devices. The PersonalJava API was created specifically for network-connectable consumer devices that people use for communications, entertainment and mobile computing. Manufacturers of consumer devices can use the PersonalJava platform to create web-enabled products that can access the vast array of applications and services on the Web. In addition to Windows CE, PersonalJava technology is supported on numerous other platforms, providing more business opportunities for Java technology developers. Among the companies that have licensed the PersonalJava platform are: Acorn, Geoworks, Lucent, Mentor Graphics' Microtec Division, Microware, QNX, Sun's JavaOS, US Software and Wind River Systems. PersonalJava technology has strong industry support due to the key benefits of portability and customizability as well as a compact memory footprint. Through the community source licensing model, any developer has the ability to access the source code for no cost. This model is expected to encourage innovation in the consumer and embedded device arena. About Sun Microsystems, Inc.
