Company Press Release
Cabletron Unveils Next Steps in Service Provider Initiative Focused On Next-Generation Business-to-Business Commerce
Delivers New VPN Technology, Powerful Hosting and Collocation Capabilities, and Comprehensive Broadband Solutions
ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 7, 1999-- Cabletron Systems (NYSE:CS - news) today detailed the next steps of an aggressive initiative, delivering innovative hardware, software and service solutions targeted at the fastest growing segments of the service provider marketplace: commercial ISPs, competitive local exchange carriers (CLECs) and multi-service cable operators.

Based on initial efforts, revenue from Cabletron's service provider customers has grown to equal 10% of the company's overall business. Dedicated sales, support, marketing and engineering resources identify opportunities and focus on the unique needs of the global service provider community. Current customer partners include major carriers such as AT&T, MCI, Sprint, GTE, British Telecom, Deutsche Telecom and France Telecom, as well as many next-generation providers.

According to a recent study by Forrester Research, hypergrowth in Internet services revenue from business-to-business communications will rival long-distance spending, growing from nearly $4 billion last year to nearly $60 billion by 2003.

Cabletron's unique solutions enable service providers to offer differentiated services to their customers by combining the inherent strengths of its cornerstone product lines. These include its industry-leading SPECTRUM multivendor management platform, application-aware, voice-ready SmartSwitch Routers (SSRs) and full-featured family of high capacity LAN and ATM SmartSwitches.

Cabletron's goal is to enable service providers (specifically, commercial ISPs, CLECs and multi-service cable operators) to generate greater cash flow and significantly grow their customer base, while helping them reliably meet the demands of their customers in three key growth areas:

Internet-based Services - In order to thrive in the Internet-driven economy, Fortune 1000, small, medium and home-based businesses will require always-on, high-bandwidth connections to enable customer service from anywhere at any time. As businesses ramp up the speed of their connections, service providers will require multi-level service capabilities that allow them to build out their network infrastructures to support a wide variety of performance and bandwidth requirements with near-perfect reliability and security.
Cabletron offers a suite of products that deliver high-speed, secure VPN services (see related press release) across a full range of ''last mile'' access technologies, including cable broadband, xDSL, PPP, Frame Relay, ISDN, wireless and traditional LAN.

Hosting Services - With the trend toward outsourced content hosting and collocation, customers can avoid the cost of building and maintaining in-house Web resources. Service providers can capitalize on this requirement by providing flexible solutions that deliver around-the-clock, high-performance application availability and improve time to market for revenue-generating e-commerce applications.
Cabletron's hosting solutions provide higher availability and reliability, as well as better response time to business-critical intranet, extranet and e-commerce applications by optimizing performance and balancing network traffic loads across multiple and/or geographically-dispersed servers.

Broadband Access - Cable operators are gaining ground as viable alternatives to more traditional telecom providers, offering Internet-based services for voice, fax, data and video. Cabletron's broadband solutions enable cable operators to offer voice services over existing data networks to telecommuters, home-based businesses and Internet-savvy consumers, connecting to the largest audience in the information economy. In addition, the solution set provides a springboard for cable operators to capture multi-tenant business opportunities.
Cabletron's multivendor SPECTRUM Enterprise Manager platform is the linchpin of the company's service provider solutions. With the surge in bandwidth-intensive application traffic traversing the Internet, service providers can utilize SPECTRUM to intelligently manage IP services in the digital domain. SPECTRUM's fault isolation enables service providers to proactively track, manage and maintain measurable levels of service over wide area networks.

Romulus Pereira, Cabletron's service provider CTO, explains, ''Our enterprise customers are increasingly looking to service providers to deliver complete business networking solutions. Our continued efforts in the service provider marketplace leverage Cabletron's enterprise expertise, management technologies and strong customer service orientation to uniquely position us to assist service providers in meeting their customers' business needs.''

''No other vendor offers such a tightly coupled, multivendor service level management solution as Cabletron,'' said Glenn Ben-Yosef, president of Clear Thinking Research, Inc. in Boston. ''Service providers can leverage SPECTRUM's unparalleled scalability, automatic fault isolation, service level management, accounting and capacity planning capabilities as the perfect solution to provision and control critical business IP services and applications.''

Leveraging its industry-leading SmartSwitch Routers (SSRs), Cabletron will target high-speed access solutions primarily toward CLECs, directly and in partnership with major suppliers such as Alcatel, Nokia, Copper Mountain, InterSpeed and Promatory. Hosting and collocation efforts will focus on commercial ISPs such as GeoCities and EarthLink. Broadband solutions will be aimed at multi-service cable operators such as Rogers Communication and Adelphia.

Cabletron will unveil additional service provider offerings throughout the year, encompassing the following next-generation solutions:

-- Managed Service Offerings and SLAs
-- Convergence
-- Multi-Tenant Building Networks
-- NAP/POP Edge Routing
-- Financing Solutions

Company Press Release
Cabletron Delivers New VPN Solutions Across Entire Line of Multi-Protocol SmartSwitch Routers
Wire-Speed VPN Security For Intranet and Extranet Connections Across Full Range of "Last Mile" Access Technologies
ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 7, 1999-- Cabletron Systems (NYSE:CS - news) today announced a new suite of Virtual Private Network (VPN) solutions that will provide cost-effective, reliable, secure VPN services between central site, remote branch office and small office/home office (SOHO) locations. The comprehensive solution set includes application-aware VPN routing platforms, directory-enabled SPECTRUM service level management (SLM) applications and support for key industry standards.

Cabletron's VPN solutions enable enterprise customers to gradually add VPN services to their existing WAN infrastructures, while service providers can leverage Cabletron's solutions to deliver the security, performance, reliability and quality of service (QoS) required to trust key business applications to the Internet.

''With an impressive lineup of VPN products spanning small offices, branch sites and large corporate offices, Cabletron is able to deliver a complete VPN solution,'' said Michael Howard, principal analyst with Infonetics Research. ''Our research has shown that customers will implement VPNs in conjunction with their existing private networks. Cabletron's solution allows them to make this migration cost-effectively, at the rate that makes sense for them.''

Cabletron's New VPN Solutions

Cabletron today introduced two new series of SmartSwitch Routers (the SSR 600 and the SSR 700 platform). The new SSRs provide flexible, high-performance VPN security and manageability between central site, and regional and branch offices.

The SSR 600 is available as a stand-alone platform, or as an integrated, high-speed interface module (HSIM) for Cabletron's SmartSwitch 2000/6000/9000 series of application-aware switches. The SSR 600 features two 10/100 Ethernet interfaces and two modular WAN interfaces (SWPIMs). IPSec and L2TP protocols with wire-speed, hardware-based compression, DES/3DES encryption and public key acceleration deliver support for hundreds of site-to-site VPN tunnels at a price point more than 35% below competitive platforms.

The SSR 710 features two Ethernet interfaces, four serial WAN ports and two ISDN PRI interfaces with hardware-based compression and DES/3DES encryption. L2TP and IPSec with high performance embedded DES and DES/3DES encryption capability ensures data security over both public and private networks and the ability to quickly establish connections with new users.

Cabletron also announced significant VPN enhancements to its current line of SSR 100, 200 and 500 SOHO and branch office routers to support secure VPN tunneling based on IPSec and L2TP. Cabletron is unique in the industry in that its products can deliver VPN solutions over all major ''last mile'' access technologies, including cable, xDSL, PPP, Frame Relay, ISDN and wireless connections.

Increased Security and Management

Cabletron's multivendor SPECTRUM Enterprise Manager platform will provide five key management services for VPN networks. A consistent, Web-based interface will simplify configuration of VPN services across multiple devices, with directory services providing storage of configuration, security and QoS policies on a per-user, application or device basis. Policy-based QoS monitoring will give users a better understanding of VPN performance. Service level agreement (SLA) monitoring will provide service providers with the information needed to deliver QoS commitments to customers. Traffic accounting of VPN services will enable service providers to generate usage reports and to verify delivery of committed service level agreements to their end user customers.

Cabletron's Enhanced VPN Solutions

Cabletron also announced plans to enhance its award-winning SSR 2000, 8000 and 8600 Family with full VPN security functions. Cabletron has agreed to license from Information Resource Engineering, Inc. (IRE) (Nasdaq:IREG - news), their SafeNet technology for use in its SSR 2000, 8000 and 8600 Family (see related release). The combination of IRE's industry-leading SafeNet cryptography performance and the SSR's wire-speed, application-aware routing will allow Cabletron to deliver VPN solutions at unprecedented, multiple OC-3 or multiple 100 Mbps throughput levels.

The entire range of SSRs are fully interoperable with application-aware, Layer 4 QoS abilities, providing scalable, end-to-end links from the enterprise to the service provider for data, voice and video communications at narrowband and broadband speeds. Complementing the differentiated service levels employed within a service provider's managed VPN offering, Cabletron's QoS, directory and policy mechanisms enable businesses to enforce priorities and bandwidth allocation among various applications and users. To address IPSec-interoperability concerns, Cabletron will submit its VPN-enabled SSRs for testing and approval by the International Computer Security Association (ICSA).

''Cabletron's VPN solutions allow enterprise customers to affordably migrate from private WAN to VPN services, and allow service providers to deliver flexible, bundled services to their customers,'' said Michael Skubisz, Cabletron's chief technology officer. ''Our entire line of router platforms are easily VPN-enabled to protect the investments of our installed base.''

Why VPNs?

Complementing existing private network capabilities, VPNs extend geographic connectivity to remote users and locations, as well as to electronic commerce customers, suppliers and extranet partners. Enterprise customers can recover the cost of their VPN investments in less than six months, while reducing their recurring WAN carrier charges by more than 50% annually. VPNs are fundamental to enterprises in their efforts to achieve global reach and enable customer service - any time, anywhere, anyhow - in support of new business applications in the Internet economy.
