>>>what if Secretary Dulles willing to shake hand [literally speaking] with Cho En-lai in Geneva. Could the whole Vietnam saga be averted?<<<<

History may be more of an art than a science, but the truth is everybody lies and misreports events, people walk out of meetings with different views, and we never can go back and reconstruct "the truth." There are few political events we truly understand. Buchanan said "No one knows what a president is thinking."

It is not generally known that John Foster Dulles was obsessive compulsive, and washed his hands 200 times a day. He had seen Chou En Lai spill fish sauce on right hand at lunch. No way he was going to shake hands. Some suspect that the fish sauce might have helped JFD's cancer which was killing him. The ironies of history.
