ETrade has more room for growth.

That is highly debatable….

1. Schwab has a larger infrastructure, the right combination of web-based, and brick and mortar. They are a de-facto bank already, just waiting for the Glass-Stegal act to be modified/repealed. For selected clients, you can make electronic payments for free, plus transfer funds electronically between institutions, they are far friendlier than a bank, lots of capabilities and flexibility.
2. They are aggressive in the use of technology, not shy to invest what is needed.
3. They are strongly moving to becoming a true discount “Global” broker. Schwab recently announced they will give access to the US markets to their clients in England.
4. They have been the leaders of the discounters, and they are not going to give up such lead without a corresponding fight. The Merrill announcement can be viewed as the disappearance of the “barrier/distinction” between “regular brokers” and “discount/online brokers”…. Which means, Schwab is now the actual leader of the entire industry, that is a great asset to have, when it comes to attracting customers. Remember the fact that E-Trade may have better technology, for a specific segment of the market, does not necessarily mean they are going to be more profitable overall, or larger growth…. In effect, (and in time), the entire world will be the new market to compete for.

5. They already have a web page in Chinese, I believe their next step may be towards Latin America, they already have a division, called Global Investing, giving you access to most markets in the world, it needs to be automated…

what if one day ETrade surpasses Schwab as the numer 1 online broker? they said that was their intention.

Yea well... Carlos Reuteman intended to become World Champion too, close, but no cigar.... E-Trade's intentions, need execution and achievement.... Ya merito Ché...

Gaston Billetes, don't be so derogatory, Argentina is a beautiful, beautiful country, you should really see our women here, beautiful, AWESOME blondes and brunettes with incredible bodies, the kind of which you don't see anywhere else.
this place is paradise, better than West Palm Beach. the south part is better than Switzerland, have you ever been to the Patagonia? incredible lakes, forests and ski resorts.

Derogatory ?? <gasp!> Do you read your own posts....?? Example:

where is Ameritrade based? Alabama, Kentucky? come on!! they should be milking cows there, not trading online.

You must be too stressed already.... I hope you saw the "<g>" in my comments.... it is called humor....

I am familiar with Argentina, had a couple of friends from there while in London. Unfortunately I have not been there yet, but I plan to and soon.

I am also somehow familiar with their excellent wines... except, I like Chilean better... (Don't get offended now....) and I love their (your) food, the bife is excellent, and I love chimichurri too...

I am sure the fish dishes must also be phenomenal...

You know the definition of Ego ?

"It is the little Argentinean in each one of us"

So settle down... I like Argentina very much... in fact I have considered moving there (I continue to consider it).... Chile interest me as well... both of these countries are probably the best in all of LatAm... their corresponding statistics are far better than any other, Argentina may have the edge... in fact... now that I remember, I had a Great Uncle (late 1800's/early 1900) who died in Tucumán.... In a duel, for a woman...!! I am certain she was a beautiful one....

I am sure you have seen this before.... but just in case you have not...

They say, that an Argentinean is an Italian who speaks Spanish, thinks he is French, while secretly wishing he was English....

Do you know what is the favorite sport in Latin America, excluding Argentina, and Not counting Soccer ?

Pulling the legs of Argentineans <g>

Now... that said, don't get mad, or be over sensitive, it is meant in good spirit... Enjoy.

My questions about Menem, were genuine.... I hear that there has been a lot of corruption.... (no worse, or better than in Mexico, under Presidente Salinas, which is the reason he lives in Ireland now.....last time I checked, or the rest of LatAm, for that matter). A Peso devaluation , bringing down the current peg with the US dollar seems a possibility.

I would be interested in seeing the US Dollar replacing the Peso as the official currency of Argentina... this would play well for all of Latin America, (IMO) and indeed, it would start opening the door for a more feasible "global trading".

There are steps towards such direction, as I understand it, a Spanish institution is going to list 12 Latin American companies in the Madrid stock exchange....

Personally, I see no better way for individuals in all of Latin America to invest, (hence protecting themselves against the ever present risk of devaluations), in the US equities market.. again, strengthening the idea of a growing population of "individual traders" benefiting companies like Schwab, E-Trade, etc.

See this....(for more of the same).

p.s. Hasta la fecha, (desde hace muchos años ya), guardo un poster de Mafalda.

Ella le pregunta a su Mamá....

Y si en vez de luchar con la vida, por que no nos hacemos amigos de ella ?

Me encanta Mafalda....

Re: Mafalda:

The following one is one of my favorites...

She reads in a dictionary the definition of "Democracia" (Democracy)

"Democracia" (from the Greek: Demos, people; Kratos, authority) Government where the people exercises Sovereignty

and then.....
