Alcatel Demonstrates End-to-End Wavelength Management Solution BusinessWire, Monday, June 07, 1999 at 15:21 ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 7, 1999--Alcatel (NYSE:ALA) demonstrates its Optinex(TM) vision for end-to-end wavelength services through its full portfolio of optical network products today at Supercomm. Using a combination of metro and longhaul DWDM products, Alcatel will clearly illustrate the vision for the 21st century network is achievable today. Wavelength management, the next major step in improving the efficiency of DWDM networks, will permit network operators to lease individual wavelengths rather than dark fibers. Carriers will be able to offer additional revenue generating services such as large data transfers, video distribution, distance learning and disaster recovery by implementing optical add/drop multiplexers and cross-connects. These optical layer devices help to reduce network cost and accelerate customer response times. Alcatel is uniquely positioned to provide the optical elements required for each segment of the network. DWDM products in Alcatel's simulated network (Booth No. 6713) include the 1640 OADM (long-haul optical add/drop multiplexer), the 1686 OADM (regional metropolitan optical add/drop multiplexer) and the 1690 OADM (enterprise and access metropolitan optical add/drop multiplexer). Wavelength management is augmented by a proof-of-concept wavelength translating all optical cross-connect. The 1650 OXC, a full-fledged optical cross-connect product is expected to be introduced during the second half of 2000. Completing Alcatel's optical networking product portfolio, the 1680 OGM (optical gateway manager) helps to manage the existing network as it migrates to the optical layer. This optical gateway product helps to reduce network cost by performing both transport and cross-connect like functionalities in a single scaleable shelf. This combination of products supports a carriers need to reduce cost, support a wide array of signal formats including ATM, IP, SONET and offer new revenue generating services.
