Corel Linux Advisory Council Brings Leaders of the Open Source and Linux Community Together \226 Key Linux(r) leaders come together in June to further the adoption of Linux in the PC world

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--Recognizing the increased interest in Linux(r), Corel Corporation (NASDAQ: COSFF, TSE: COS) has formed the Corel Linux Advisory Council, a forum that will allow leaders from the open source and commercial Linux world to come together and discuss the challenges and opportunities facing Linux.

The first meeting of the Corel Linux Advisory Council will take place on June 14 and 15, 1999, in Ottawa. This event is a unique opportunity for leaders in the Linux community to meet and discuss ways to ensure the success of the operating system (OS), and to accelerate the development of the OS and its applications. The council will serve as a focal point of communications for leaders in the Linux world so that they can share ideas and meet the needs of the Linux community.

''Avenues through which the open source community and commercial vendors can come together to discuss how to best move Linux forward in the enterprise are greatly needed,'' said Sandra Steere Potter, Senior Analyst, Linux Services, The Aberdeen Group, Inc. ''Efforts such as Corel's are to be applauded. I hope to see many vendors and members of the open source community try this new avenue out.''

The Corel Linux Advisory Council will attempt to address issues and propose solutions to create an environment which helps Windows(r) operating system vendors to understand the possibilities of Linux, and to assist in the understanding and the role of commercial applications in the Linux community. The forum will also provide a framework for the continued growth and development of Linux, and provide a unified commercial voice in association with open source partners. In addition, the forum will provide a central voice for the open source community.

''We have seen how the Linux movement works and it's been very successful,'' said Dr. Michael Cowpland, president and chief executive officer of Corel Corporation. ''We want to follow the ideology of the Linux community, and ensure that the core principles of Linux are kept alive in the commercial environment. We also want to continue the growth of Linux by bringing it to new markets in the PC world.''
