MediaOne(R) Launches Digital Telephone Services in Newton, Needham, Wellesley, Watertown, Dedham, Sherborn, Weston and Wayland

Massachusetts Residents Offered Clearer Sound, all of the Most Popular Calling Features at Prices Between 26 to 59 Percent Lower Than the Competition

ANDOVER, Mass., June 8 /PRNewswire/ -- MediaOne®, the Broadband services arm of MediaOne Group (NYSE: UMG - news), today announces the introduction of local Digital Telephone Services in eight additional Massachusetts communities. MediaOne will provide a full spectrum of popular calling features at prices between 26 and 59 percent lower than the competition in Newton, Needham, Wellesley, Watertown, Dedham, Sherborn and Weston on June 8 and in Wayland on June 21.

MediaOne is offering its Digital Telephone Services with 15 popular calling features, such as Caller ID, Call Waiting and Last Call Return (*69), unlimited local calling plus touchtone service, to residents in these communities for a monthly price of $26.95.

MediaOne is also offering its Digital Telephone Services customers a choice of two regional calling plans that include unlimited calls to Metropolitan Boston and Eastern Massachusetts at a value up to 26 percent below the competition. Customers in these communities will be able to place an unlimited number of calls to the 617, 508, 781 and 978 area codes with the Unlimited Eastern Massachusetts Calling Plan for an additional monthly price of $22.95. Or, customers may choose the Metropolitan Calling Plan which enables them to place an unlimited number of calls to 84 Metropolitan Boston communities for an additional $12.95 per month.

MediaOne Digital Telephone Services are provided over the company's state- of-the-art hybrid fiber optic/coaxial cable (HFC) or Interactive Broadband Network, which also brings MediaOne customers quality cable television and Road Runner high-speed Internet services.

MediaOne Digital Telephone Services are compatible with any household's existing telephones and wiring, and MediaOne telephone customers may keep their existing phone number. Customers who sign up early will receive free installation, a free month of local telephone service and two months of voice mail at no charge. And, if within the first 30 days, customers are not completely satisfied with their Digital Telephone Services, MediaOne will switch them back to their previous provider at no cost.

With the introduction of Digital Telephone Services to an additional 70,816 households in these communities, MediaOne's local telephone services will be available in 40 Massachusetts communities and to over 326,000 households.

MediaOne began offering local telephone services over its Broadband network to Massachusetts residents on September 1, 1998. MediaOne's Digital Telephone Services are now available in Arlington, Andover, Beverly, Billerica, Boxford, Burlington, Chelmsford, Dedham, Dracut, Hamilton, Ipswich, Lowell, Marblehead, Methuen, Middleton, Nahant, Needham, Newton, North Andover, North Reading, Newbury, Newburyport, Reading, Revere, Rowley, Saugus, Sherborn, Stoneham, Tewksbury, Topsfield, Waltham, Watertown, Wellesley, Wenham, West Newbury, Weston, Wilmington, Winchester and Woburn. MediaOne Digital Telephone Services will also be available in Wayland on June 21. MediaOne plans to offer local telephone services to over one million households in MediaOne's Northeast service area.

MediaOne Digital Telephone Services will be available to both MediaOne cable customers and non-cable customers. MediaOne currently offers digital telephone service in Atlanta (GA), Jacksonville (FL), Los Angeles (CA), Pompano Beach (FL) and Richmond (VA).
