Hello blankmind,

You stated:

Actually, this *is* a huge area ...

When you use voice over the Internet, to call the pstn number, the software running on the PC needs to first connect to a gateway that provide the Internet-to-pstn connection. Once the software connects to the gateway, it then passes the pstn number to the gateway, which then dials the number.

So there is the need for a couple fo things:

1. The client application which can tell the difference between a call to another Internet PC and a call to a pstn number.

2. A directory for Internet PCs so that you can "look up" a friends PC phone number and call them ... (it is important to understand that applications like AOL's ICQ are being used for this today!)

3. A directory which lists all the gateways installed in the Internet, and a mapping which indicates which one to use based on the pstn number provided.

In some cases you can use the IP address of the gateway or friends PC, but only if it will never change! ;-)
