Re: 7th generation technology...

The K7 only needs to be better than what is on the market to be a success for AMD. It doesn't matter how it compares with what Intel has in the works for us in late 2000 for their 786. Consumers want the best, and those that know about the K7 could very well want to buy their first non-Intel processor ever. I know I will.

Can anyone say that AMD is not better positioned now vs. Intel than at any time in their past? AMD is under no pressure to beat Intel (as far as revenue, profits, etc.), only to beat past AMD performance.

With any K7 penetration at all, AMD's shares could easily move higher.

Tench: Part of the problem is that the K7 infrastructure is immature right now because of chipsets, lack of on-die L2 cache, manufacturing concerns like the transition to the 0.18 micron process, etc. Once the infrastructure reaches the maturity of the P6 infrastructure, then we can really see the K7 take off. But how long will that take?

Exactly. The problem is not so much CPU performance, but rather the underlying (chipset) infrastructure. How long will it take? Given AMD/VIA/ALi 's track record: too long. Unfortunately. Hopefully, VIA and ALi are properly motivated, since without AMD they would be in a perilous situation.
