As you rightly concluded...<<You see it is this kind of thing that spawns what you call extremists.....It does not speak well for your side.>> Extremists may extract doctrines from the source and apply them to further their self serving agenda. It happens in all circles. There isn't a reasonable human being on earth that wouldn't support peace and kind treatment of other human beings. The majority are reasonable and extremists are not, nor do they see any need to be. The religion of Islam forbids compulsion in the application of the religion. Extremists violate the religion as opposed to being representatives of it. Reasonable people do not follow them, which is why they stand out. There are volumes and volumes of literature honoring women in Islam. It is the fastest growing Religion in the World. It is rare that a male in the US accepts Islam, (Farakan Muslims being an exception because it promotes black males politically). Huge numbers of females in the US are flocking to Islam, even though the pressure of being rejected by their peers, like you, is tremendous. They aren't born into it. There is no oppression forcing them to. They choose it, in the face of lots of propoganda against it. What reasonable human being would choose what you have presented for themselves? None. They've heard all the dirt with fifty times the magnetude of your presentation. There is another Islam, the real thing. I don't imagine that you will bother yourself with it.
