Philipah, re:advice

Drop the ZIP drive if you can and replace the CD-ROM with a Read/Write CD-ROM. HP makes a nice one. Its really all you're ever likely to need. Of course DVD might be nice if 'movies' fits your useage profile.

Of course, buy the most CPU you can reasonably afford - it will extend the life of your system. Memory helps too.

regards,
jh

Philipah,

Walter Mossberg is a respected consumer-oriented reporter and provides good unbiased perspectives on the PC world. You may want to go and his recent column "Personal Technology" in WSJ about buying a PC. Two things I remember very well and agree with are:
i) Go easy on the processor (Celeron would save a bunch over PIII)
ii) Loadup on the RAM (especially if you want to run multiple apps at once or do some graphics work - photos, greeting cards etc.)
Makes the most difference for real world applications.

Good luck,
Chuck

Philipah,

Re: Machine

Obviously you wouldn't buy an AMD chip.

But seriously if you are not into gaming- buy the fastest Celeron at 466 Mhz now or 500Mhz in a few weeks.

And a DVD is cool to have too.

Trade in the bucks you save for a bigger display or one of the new LCD flat panels.

Good luck with your PC purchase.

Kash

Hi philipah,

I'd go with the ATI All-In-Wonder 128 video card instead of the "Pro". The AIW 128 is a significant improvement over the older Pro model. The 3D acceleration of the card will not interest you since you said you are not a gamer but if you are planning on doing any video editing on your PC, the AIW 128 delivers best compression results with a Pentium III (see last table at the bottom of the following page).

atitech.com

Also, if you are a movie buff, you'd enjoy a DVD drive. The ATI AIW 128 will give you good DVD performance, specially in a PIII system. So you won't need to buy any additional hardware cards for DVD playback. DVD playback on a PC gives you impressive HDTV-like image quality. It's lots of fun! The combination will give you TV reception, digital VCR and DVD playback on your PC.

Enjoy the upgrade! Sounds like you are putting together a very nice system.

Shahen.

My bias would be to get an internal zip drive. They are only $80 and they really help with Norton Utilities Rescue Disks.

Philip - Re: "Can you suggest any variation(s)?"

You might want to investigate the newer ATI All in Wonder 128 - an improved version of the All In Wonder Pro.

Check out Anandtech.com and look for his review of these two cards - I recollect he liked the new version but didn't like the older on which was on your list.

Also, check out the Motherboard and see if it has the Intel 440BX chip set. If it doesn't, BEWARE.

As far as MHz, choose the highest that you are comfortable paying for.

Remember, 450 MHz is a lot.

Paul

How about losing the ATI card and replacing it with a Diamond MM (TnT) Viper 770??

Hmmmmm.
