CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 7, 1999--At the 7th meeting of the Portable Device Working Group of SDMI, held in Tokyo from June 3-5, 1999, consensus was achieved on the reference architecture for first generation portable music devices, paving the way for completion of SDMI's Portable Device Specification by the June 30 deadline.

The meeting, attended by over 75 technology and record companies, heard 10 presentations regarding proposed technology solutions for the implementation of SDMI content screening functions. These functions will be used to effect the transition of "phase one" portable devices, expected to be available later this year, to future "phase two" devices, enabling the delivery of new SDMI-compliant musical recordings and providing more effective protection against piracy. A process was agreed upon for the testing of a number of the proposed solutions against a set of evaluation criteria in an expedited manner, consistent with the timelines of SDMI. The consensus architecture anticipates that the selected solution can be inserted into the specification after its June 30th delivery in a manner that will be fully consistent and compatible.

The development of an SDMI marketing group, consisting of marketing experts from the consumer electronics, information technology and recording industries, was also initiated at the Tokyo meeting. This cross-industry group will lay the groundwork for the development and delivery of marketing and awareness programs in support of the consumer and marketplace benefits of SDMI-compliant products and services. "The determination with which the Portable Device Working Group is proceeding is truly impressive," said Leonardo Chiariglione, Executive Director of SDMI. "There is no doubt in my mind that SDMI will have made an enormous leap forward when the portable device specification is finalized at the end of June."

How much different is EPAC from PAC? Is anybody surprised that Celestial hasn't figured out its EPAC software player yet? Celestial was the only PAC software on the market. That means there are currently no EPAC software players.
