Beijing - China's first MPEG -2 decoder chip, announced here by foreign investor Beijing Intelligent Electronics Co. Ltd. (BIE), could help boost the country's emerging DVD and related industries. The IE9801 decoder is also seen by experts here as decreasing China's reliance on imported decoders.

BIE said its MPEG -2 device will support a range of system, video and audio applications, including DVD players, Supervideo CD players, digital and satellite-TV receivers and set-top boxes. BIE is also targeting emerging communications-computer and consumer technologies that are merging in information appliances.

Established in 1992, BIE is focusing on ASIC designs and software development. Work on the IE9801 device began four years ago. The MPEG-2 decoder is based on a 0.35-micron chip that complies with international standard bit rates.
